The best night of Christmas in Valencia is not Christmas Eve. It is 5 January, when the Three Kings come ashore at the Marina and parade through the old town, and for a visitor it beats 25 December, when the city’s museums shut. Christmas in Valencia is a season of nearly 50 days that runs from the light switch-on in late November to the Three Kings parade on 5 January. Pick your dates with that in mind and the rest falls into place. In 2026 both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Friday, and on Tuesday 8 December the council museums open free from 10am to 2pm.
What is there to do in Valencia at Christmas? Walk the lights on calle de la Paz, see the free nativity scenes, take children to Expojove from 26 December to 4 January, watch three fireworks displays at 11.59pm on 31 December and catch the Three Kings parade on 5 January at 5.30pm. Christmas Day is quiet: most museums close.
Which week to come, and what each one offers
Valencia’s Christmas has three distinct stretches, and they suit different trips. From the airport, metro lines 3 and 5 reach Colón, in the centre, on a zone A and B ticket at €4.80, so arrival day can end on the lights walk. Early December is lights, cribs and markets. The week from 26 December to 4 January is the family and party week. The tail, 5 and 6 January, is all about the Kings.
When is everything on at Christmas 2026, with the 2025 dates as reference
Three things are already fixed for 2026: Expojove, the San Silvestre fun run and the trading Sundays. The rest of the programme is published by the Ayuntamiento de València between late November and early December, so the table gives last season’s dates as a guide.

Where to see the lights, the cribs and the markets
The 2025 lights used 274 arches and 45 trees, with a 25 metre fir in Plaza del Ayuntamiento and 60 arches on calle de la Paz. The core walk, from the town hall to the Serranos towers, is 2.4 km and takes about 32 minutes; the stops are mapped in the Christmas lights route.
Nativity scenes, belenes, matter more here than trees. The council’s crib in the Salón de Cristal, with about 400 figures over 40 square metres, plus two life-size ones outdoors, were free in 2025; opening days are in the guide to Valencia’s nativity scenes. The Plaza de la Reina market ran from 28 November to 6 January, and the Mercadillo del Centro on calle Hospital stayed open until 2am on 24 December. Which one to pick is in Valencia’s Christmas markets, and what to buy to eat, from sweet-potato pastissets to the Epiphany casca, is in Valencian Christmas sweets.
What to do with children between 26 December and 4 January
Two fairs run side by side.
Expojove, at Feria Valencia, opens from 26 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, 11am to 8pm, with tickets from €3 and metro lines 1, 3 and 4 to the door; hours for 31 December and 1 January are in the Expojove guide. La Central, in the Parc Central, is free: in 2025 it opened the same ten days, 11.30am to 8.30pm, over more than 5,000 square metres, with the tree lit every day at 6pm.
The ice rink in Plaza del Ayuntamiento cost €10 for 30 minutes in 2025 and opened 11am to 11pm. On 22 and 26 December 2026 the Roig Arena stages two family musicals, Estoy Solo en Casa at 6.30pm and Rudolph at 6pm, from €22 and €24.20. A day-by-day plan by age is in Valencia at Christmas with kids.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, where to eat
In Spain the big family meal is the dinner of 24 December, Nochebuena, and lunch on the 25th. Meal times run late all year, with lunch from 2pm and dinner from 9pm, and at Christmas they run later still. Restaurants that open both days need booking weeks ahead.
Last season, set menus in central Valencia ran from €50 to €195, and some served paella-style rice on the 25th. Menus and what each price includes are in Valencia restaurants on Christmas Day.
On 25 December itself, the council museums, the Cathedral and the Central Market shut. Bioparc zoo opens every day of the year and the lights carry on, and the full day-by-day list is in what’s open in Valencia at Christmas.
Where to spend New Year’s Eve and how the grapes work
The evening before, on 30 December 2026 at 8pm, the San Silvestre Popular Valenciana fun run starts on calle Xàtiva. On 31 December, Spaniards eat twelve grapes on the twelve chimes of midnight, and in Valencia the crowd does it in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
On the 2025 night the council cleared the square at 8.30pm and reopened it at 10pm through five entrances, with DJs from 10.30pm to 1.45am, reusable cups and glass banned. At 11.59pm Pirotecnia Vulcano fired three displays at once: in the square, at the Monteolivete bridge and in section XIV of the Turia gardens, by the City of Arts and Sciences rose garden. FGV kept Metrovalencia running all night. Entry points and timing are in New Year’s Eve in the Town Hall square, and gala dinners, which ran from €75 to €400 in 2025, in New Year’s Eve dinners and parties.
When and where to see the Three Kings
Spanish children get their presents on 6 January, from the Three Kings, and the night before is the parade.
On 5 January 2026 the Kings landed by sea at Plaza de la Sal in the Marina at 4.30pm, then paraded from 5.30pm through the Puerta del Mar, calle de la Paz and Plaza de la Reina to Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where they pay homage at the nativity scene and wave from the balcony. Chairs cost €4, rented on the spot from 12.30pm.
In the lagoon villages south of the city, the Kings arrive by boat: at El Palmar and El Saler they stepped off at the jetty at 6pm. Where to stand in the centre and how to see the boats is in the Three Kings parade route. On the 6th the family table ends with a roscón, a ring cake with a hidden figurine; where to buy one is in roscón de Reyes in Valencia.
What may disappoint
Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on a Friday in 2026, and both close the museums, so a long weekend built around them loses its first day.
The Central Market, shut on Sundays too, leaves only Saturday 26 December and Saturday 2 January, from 7.30am to 3pm. Most of the 2026 programme, from the rink to the cribs, is only published in late November or early December. And the main square hosts nearly everything, which means access controls on the two biggest nights.
Frequently asked questions about Christmas in Valencia
Is Valencia worth visiting at Christmas?
Yes, especially between 26 December and 6 January. That window has the Expojove fair, the free La Central family space, the 30 December fun run, New Year’s Eve with three fireworks displays at 11.59pm and the Three Kings parade on 5 January. Avoid building a short trip around 25 December alone.
When do the Christmas lights go on in Valencia?
In late November. In 2025 the switch-on was on Friday 21 November at 7.30pm in Plaza del Ayuntamiento, and the lights stayed up until 6 January. The 2026 date has not been announced yet; the city usually confirms it in mid November.
What is the Three Kings parade in Valencia?
It is the 5 January procession that brings the Three Kings, who deliver Spanish children’s presents. In 2026 they landed by sea at Plaza de la Sal in the Marina at 4.30pm and the parade left at 5.30pm, ending at Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Watching is free; a chair costs €4.
Where can you see the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Valencia?
In 2025 three displays went off at 11.59pm at once: in Plaza del Ayuntamiento, at the Monteolivete bridge and in section XIV of the Turia gardens, by the City of Arts and Sciences rose garden. The two riverbed sites avoid the controlled entry to the main square.
What do people eat at midnight on New Year’s Eve in Spain?
Twelve grapes, one on each of the twelve chimes at midnight, for twelve months of luck. In Valencia people bring them to Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the 2025 party ran from 10.30pm to 1.45am. Glass bottles are banned in the square, so pack grapes, not cava.
Is anything open in Valencia on Christmas Day?
Bioparc zoo opens every day of the year and the metro runs, but city museums, the Cathedral and the Central Market close on 25 December, as they do on 1 January and 6 January. Evenings are easier: the lights and some Christmas markets carry on.
Come for the week after Christmas, not the day itself, and stay for the Kings.
